Phil Lesh snuck up on New York City with a pair of shows at the legendary S.O.B.'s in lower Manhattan. That's right -- Phil Lesh and friends ride again! Last night's show got mixed reviews on philzone.com, but as Phil himself pointed out from the stage (again, according to PZ -- I wasn't there), the band had only one day to rehearse for these stealth shows.
Phil's friends this round include Larry McCray and Larry Campbell on guitar and vocals, Christina Dufree on backup vocals, Jaz Sawyer on drums, and Steve Molitz on keyboard. John Molo is expected to make the show tonight; a bad bout of food poisoning made Sawyer the backup man of the hour.
Interestingly, Phil's website contains no word on Phil's recent bout with prostate cancer, but we can only hope that he has returned to his previous form.

Though Jazzfest is ostensibly a daytime music festival, many attendees (this writer included) are all about the nighttime gigs. It is possible to see several shows a night without ever reaching the fairgrounds. Fortunately, we caught some daytime shows, like the McDonogh High School Gospel Choir and Paulette Wright in the Gospel Tent, Ellis Marsalis in the Jazz Tent, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux at Congo Square, and Eric Lindell at the Fais Do Do Stage, not to mention a rousing parade through the festival grounds with the Storyville Stompers. And then there were the headliners – Jimmy Buffett, Paul Simon, and Lionel Richie. But as expected, the real action was to be found outside the festival.

Anyone who has spent more than an hour in New Orleans knows what a special town it is. There is a deep energy which flows through its streets, breathing life into all its people like a shot of adrenaline. Call it voodoo, mojo or just plain old "bon temps" -- whatever it is, it's impossible to miss. That's one of the things that made it so heart wrenching last fall to see this city so devastated by Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, to imagine a city rendered uninhabitable by the violence of nature and the folly of man, and to think that the beautiful Crescent City that gave so much pleasure to so many might never return to its former brilliance.

The Rhythm Devils Take Green Apple to the Streets - Last night, the Grateful Deads Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, collectively known as the Rhythm Devils, hosted an all-star jam session at New Yorks Canal Room. The official kickoff celebration for the Green Apple Music Festival, the Rhythm Devils opened the weekends festivities with a cover of Santanas Jingo. Fronting an ace band of Jammys performers, including Mike Gordon, Steve Kimock, Steven Perkins, Charlie Musselwhite, Baaba Maal, the Mutaytor and "2001" author Deodato, among several additional percussionists, the Rhythm Devils explored a wide range of percussion based sounds, ranging from drum-and-bass electronica to tribal influenced world music. A Deodato-led version of 2001 and Iko Iko rank among the evenings choice covers. At the end of the night, Hart led both his ensemble and the entire audience onto the streets for a extended, evening closing drum jam to the tune of "Not Fade Away." Hart and Kreutzmann will co-host the Jammy Awards tonight, with Hart also leading a drum circle in front of Grand Central Station at 5 PM. Friday. [Relix News]
